Introduction: Dr. Nele Sawallisch is a tenured Assistant Professor of American Literature at the University of Trier, Germany. She is the author of the monograph Fugitive Borders: Black Canadian Cross-Border Literature at Mid-Nineteenth Century. Current Research: African American and African Canadian literature and culture, the North American West, Transnational American Studies, Humor Studies, Comedy Studies.
Lecture Description: All Gold Canyon (1906) is one of Jack London's most important short stories, but not much research has been done on it. And in 2018, when the Coen brothers chose to present the novel as a chapter in the film collection The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, they not only drew attention to the story, but also proposed a specific way to interpret the novel from the prospective of the lore of the mysterious and wild Western American. But this is just one possible interpretation of this novel by Jack London. We can also read it through a variety of prospective, such as life-writing, ecological writing, and naturalistic writing. This lecture will discuss how this highly symbolic story of Jack London has been brought to the screen, what questions it raises, and what pedagogical opportunities it may present.
